Philosophy & Practice Info
Practice Philosophy
I have maintained a successful private practice in this community for the past 43 years. I have been actively involved in teaching and also sustaining a busy active practice primarily encompassing aesthetic [cosmetic] , hand, cancer, and traumatic surgery. I am a strong advocate in professional medical ethics which reverts to my upbringing in a medical environment. I was fortunate to have been raised in a medically oriented family and was early on indoctrinated into the importance of proper expedient patient care and offering compassion to the patient and their family. My father-in-law was the first plastic surgeon in Pittsburgh, Penna. {James A. Cowan Jr.} and my father was a well respected general surgeon in Johnstown, Penna. These gentlemen both devoted most of their weekly daytime hours to the care of their patients. I, like them, love my chosen profession. I feel proper understanding of the patients desires and needs, pre and post operatively, are as important as the surgical techniques applied. I spend a significant period of time with pre-operative patients evaluating personally each situation.

Surgical Facility
The first constructed and approved local freestanding outpatient surgical facility was created by my office 28 years ago [1979] & remains "State of the Art". This provides for a private but highly supervised setting, ideal to perform most types of cosmetic and reconstructive surgery. Our facility compares to a hospital in all beneficial ways, but with the added dimension of more private, personalized treatment, a specially trained staff, and decreased costs. The facilities have been accredited by the American Association for Accreditation of Ambulatory Plastic Surgery Facilities and The Federated Ambulatory Surgery Assoc. In a patient survey, conducted in 2000, by an independent research firm, over 98% of The Center For Plastic Surgery patients responding would recommend others to the facility. In addition to our center I have surgical privileges in 13 Cincinnati area hospitals and 8 other free standing surgical complexes where procedures perhaps requiring overnight patient stays are performed. In 1996 I was certified as a facility inspector for the American Association for Accreditation of Ambulatory Surgery Facilities, Inc. (AAAASF)
Consultation
Consultation fee is $85 and is credited against our surgical fee if a subsequent cosmetic procedure is carried to fruition. In our consultation, I attempt to ferret out the patients requests, needs, and anxieties and balance them with reality. I am willing to express my impression with each patient in a frank but not austere discussion as to the feasibility of each procedure and technique, or perhaps discouraging such a venture. I offer consultations on Mon, Tues, Wed, Thurs & Fri with elective surgery on the same days. I feel my experience is beneficial in my patients making a reliable decision.

Computer Imaging
I do not agree with the concept of pre operative computer imaging. I do not feel it assures the patient of the eventual outcome post operatively and often creates a false sense of security and an implied guarantee. I will recommend patients to prior patients, who have volunteered, to discuss their feelings, results and experiences.
