2. Technical Smarts: Basic Product Ingredients - What Are They and How They Effect Skin

This presentation will provide participants with the tools to better equip themselves to meet the needs of their patients. To be successful in 2005 we need to stay on the cutting edge and be able to decipher to each of our patients how to best improve plus maintain their skin.
The problem is that it is a challenge for all of us, as medical skincare technicians, to be able to understand, process and apply the vast amount of data that is available in today’s market. Plus, our patients are very savvy.
The solution to this problem is, for us as medical skincare technicians, to be able to look at the total picture and decide what is valid and clinical grade so we can best serve our patients. How do we do this?
If we understand the key ingredients used in products and peels, how they are formulated and tested, and how to best use and relay this information to patients then we will be successful in our medical skincare practices. Top secrets to customizing patients’ skincare programs will be revealed.
What are your responsibilities as a medical skincare technician? Do patients expect more from you in the medical field than they do in an aesthetic setting? Why do patients come to see you in a medical office? Because you are the expert!

3. Nurses Roundtable Discussion

Plastic surgery nursing has changed dramatically over the past 20 years. From working in the OR and hospital setting to an office patient coordinator and skin care specialist. Eighteen years ago we became collagen injection specialists which then led to performing light chemical peels and the implementation of skin care products thirteen years ago. Now we perform various laser treatments, own our own businesses and became marketing experts.
This discussion will help those who are new to the skin care industry as well as provide an exchange of ideas among those with years of experience in plastic surgery nursing. Our goal should be to keep the patient’s expectations and safety in high regard as well as protect the physician and ourselves from any adversities.

4. Aesthetician Roundtable Discussion

The goals, format and theme of this year’s roundtable are the sharing of issues and solutions of subjects that pertain to the “Plastic Surgical Skin Care Practice”. The format will include a positive, productive, professional and organized, open, monitored discussion. The attendees are encouraged to bring a list of questions, issues, solutions and challenges involved in their medical skin care practices. The goal is to share information involving the business of being a plastic surgical skin care specialist.
Topics will include but not be limited to products, treatments, protocols, peels, vendors, devices, pricing and competitive strategies. As a group we will summarize and rank the challenges and successes of the skin care specialist in today’s market. A survey will be completed by each attendee to compile data regarding our most important choices and issues in our practices. All attending are encouraged to participate in this networking opportunity.

6. Welcome to our World: An Introduction to Pre and Post-op Protocols for Plastic Surgery Procedures

This course has been designed to facilitate the transition and increase
the potential for success for skin care specialists entering into the
medical arena, and will provide information to increase the individual's
effectiveness in pre and postoperative skin care management. The
description "introduction" should not be confused with "beginning," for this
course has been developed for skin care specialists of all skill levels who
seek to increase their understanding of the challenges of skin care
management for patients undergoing aesthetic surgery of the face. Viewing
intraoperative photographs will increase sensitivity to the palate for which
skin care specialists render treatment. The skin and soft tissue, which are
often compromised by the trauma of surgery, may respond quite differently
than is expected. Therefore, special considerations ought be given to
prevent complications or untoward sequelae.
Special emphasis will be placed on the skin's response to surgery and
how these conditions can be assessed and effectively treated.
Handout materials will be useful to the attendees and will include
documentation forms, a bibliography with recommended readings, product
evaluation forms, and the instructor's published skin care chapters.
Interactive discussions will help participants create treatment protocols to
meet treatment goals.

7. Setting Up and Implementation of Your Office Laser Program: A Step by Step Process

This will be a step by step approach in how to develop your office laser policy and procedures to include standard operating procedures for your current light based devices. Special attention will be given to ANSI Z136.3 guidelines for the “Safe Use of Lasers in Health Care Facilities,” JCAHO and other governing bodies.
